Thalamos produce transformative technology solutions for mental health crisis care. They work with a range of health and care organisations to ensure accurate data is being recorded across the Mental Health pathway.
The challenge
Earlier this year, Thalamos tasked us with redesigning their site following a big announcement for the organisation.
Thalamos aim to create innovative and intuitive software products which reduce the administrative burden of the Mental Health Act. They offer solutions for providers such as Mental Health Trusts, Local Authorities, and the Police.
As well as streamlining user journeys for different audiences, we needed to refresh the look and feel of the site, with a greater emphasis on Thalamos as a business. This not only meant finding a new way of applying the Thalamos brand, but also adding new features and functionalities to the site.
The company was also under pressure to get the new site up and running as soon as possible. In order to accommodate this, we took a two phased approach, allowing critical information and resources to be available quickly while maintaining rigorous security measures.
The work
We started off our discovery phase with an in-person kickoff. We identified their key audience groups and discussed the needs of the new site for both internal stakeholders and users. We split the development of the new site into two phases, establishing priorities for pages or resources that needed to be online as soon as possible, versus nice-to-haves that we could afford to spend some more time perfecting.
Using this information, our design team developed sitemaps and user journeys, taking an iterative approach to ensure these plans matched the goals of the organisation. The team took a mobile-first approach to guarantee a user-friendly experience on all screen sizes. We developed separate user pathways for the different user groups, taking into account the organisation’s desire to make the site as transparent as possible. We then built these out into black and white wireframes, allowing the client to get an early sense of the structure and functionality of the site.
Once UX designs had been finalised, we focused our attention on the site’s look and feel. The client had expressed a desire to move away from darker colours to the lighter ones in their brand, so our design team accommodated this in their UI designs. Once these were approved by the client, we applied these designs to the earlier wireframes and the first phase of the site was ready for development.
During development, we created front-end templates and components, as well as a simple and easy to use WordPress CMS that allowed the site content to be edited by Thalamos themselves. As many of the company’s users access their software through the website, our development team worked to make sure that redirects were in place from the old site so that any users could access their products as easily as before. We also ensured that all cyber security was fully up to date to prevent the organisation from any attacks – a key priority for the redesign.
Once we had launched Phase 1, we set about developing Phase 2 of the site, which included more detailed user journeys as well as some interactive features and new resources. This included a pricing calculator, which allows users to view potential costs and savings associated with different Thalamos products.
The Results
The result of this process was an intuitive site that provides clearer information for different user groups, as well as a better representation of Thalamos as an organisation. Our close collaboration with the client ensured that both user needs and organisational goals were met, supporting Thalamos in their mission to make mental health crisis care swifter, simpler, and safer.
We were delighted to work with Pixel Fridge (again!) for the latest iteration of our website. Having worked with the team for a number of years now, we have built a great relationship which allows us to properly evolve our thinking through the design and build process.
It’s been fantastic to see how our two companies have grown alongside each other over the years. They continue to do excellent work and we’re grateful of their support.
